This long, linear state forest borders some of the most beautiful and exciting sections of the Peshtigo River. Anglers know the river's free-flowing portion for its excellent fly-fishing; paddlers brave the Midwest's longest continuous whitewater rapids; and boaters can access more than 3,000 acres of flowage from 15 boat landings. The forest offers a family campground and boat-in campsites. Old Veteran's Lake Campground is in a quiet, wooded setting, about 16 miles northwest of the village of Crivitz. Several primitive, remote campsites along the Peshtigo River are also available (permits are needed and can be obtained at the property office).
CampFinder checks Wisconsin State Parks every 30 minutes, around the clock, and emails you when a booked-up night opens back up. That catches most cancellations, which sit open for hours; at the few campgrounds that refill in seconds it can miss the race.
