Two forks of the Black River flow through this 68,000-acre forest comprised of pine and oak woods under high sandstone abutments. This central Wisconsin forest offers many recreational opportunities, including camping, canoeing, hunting, hiking, skiing and ATV riding. Three different family campgrounds are found within the forest (Castle Mound, East Fork and Pigeon Creek). Both an outdoor and indoor group camp are available at the East Fork Campground. A reservable shelter is in the picnic area at Castle Mound.
CampFinder checks Wisconsin State Parks every 30 minutes, around the clock, and emails you when a booked-up night opens back up. That catches most cancellations, which sit open for hours; at the few campgrounds that refill in seconds it can miss the race. Set up a free availability alert for Black River State Forest.
